Spring Break!

Spring break is just around the corner for many kids around the country. Many parents have to keep working though, but one way to make it special is to take one day off and plan to spend it with your kids. Check with your kids to find out what they would like to do. There are so many things to do, maybe go to a movie, skating, sledding, having friends over for a slumber party. Let your kids help with the planning and have fun!

New Years Resolutions

Have you made any resolutions for 2010? I usually make several, this year I've decided to make one. I think most people try to improve everything in their lives at once, but with so many things to work you can easily lose focus and end up giving up. So, my one resolution is to lose weight. It will be my main focus. Try it, see if one resolution will work for you.

Do you know what your kids want to do for Halloween? Ask them how they would like to celebrate Halloween, they might surprise you and want to stay home to greet the other trick or treaters. Maybe they would like to go to their school party or invite some friends to your house. Make sure you get their costumes ready early and have candy or other treats at home for all the spooky guests.

I know we're all busy but...it is important to help your kids learn to prepare themselves for their busy day too. Now that school has started again for most of our kids, we need to make sure they are planning ahead. That should start the night before, make plans with your kids and let them know you are there to help them. Some things that might help: A scheduled time for homework and a quiet place to do it. Clean clothes ready to wear, no ironing or searching for what to wear at the last minute in the morning. A place by the door for shoes, coats, hats, backpacks etc. Also, a basket or box where the kids can put any paperwork that you need to sign or read. A healthy breakfast and time to eat it. Lunches should also be packed the night before. If you have a big family, maybe the younger kids should bathe at night and the older kids shower in the morning. Think about everyone in the family and what will work out best. (Don't forget to get the kids to help with some of these chores and ask for their ideas too).

Most Moms (& Dads) are starting to shop for school clothes and supplies. Next time you head out to the stores, keep these ideas in mind.

Shop at the discount stores; Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Office Depot, Dollar Stores. Check your local area for thrift shops too. Everywhere you go, look for the sales.

Don't forget the garage sales, yard sales, moving sales; you can find some great deals!
Check your local paper first to look for sales that advertise clothes and books for sale. Be prepared to spend some time at each place you stop.

When you find things you like, ask if they'll take a lower price. Most people are trying to get rid of stuff they don't need anymore and will come down a little on the price. You'll be surprised at the deals you can find.

How do you spend your lunch break?

I've been thinking about the way I spend my lunch break and plan to make some changes. When you are working all day, it is important to take a break at lunch time. Sure, there will be times when you need to run errands instead but make that the exception. If you have little kids and don't want to run errands after work, plan to do the errands during your lunch hour but only once or twice a week, not every day. Try to get away from your desk and plan to go out with friends maybe once a week. If you would rather be alone, go for a walk or read a book after you've eaten your lunch. Think of what you can do during your lunch break that will make you happy and refreshed.

Find time to excercise

How can you find time to exercise when you are already so busy? It is so important to stay in shape, not only for yourself but also for your family. Here are some ways to fit some exercise in every day.
Park further away from your building at work, from the grocery store, from the kids activities, and everywhere else you need to go. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it does add up. Do you get one or two breaks during your work day? Why not take a quick walk around the building or around the parking lot if the weather is nice? Don't forget to use your lunch hour too, you can go to the nearest gym when the weather is bad. Of course, when it is nice outside you can go for a walk instead of eating out all the time. Some employers have a spare room that they allow employees to use before or after work for exercise sessions. Think of some creative ways that you can fit in some exercise each day. When you are home in the evenings and weekends, you can always find ways to stay active with your kids and have fun.

It is almost time for schools around the country to close for the summer break. I'm sure your kids are getting excited and can't wait. But, if you work from home, how will you handle the change? Your answer depends on how old your children are and how well you plan ahead. Some parents will only work after the kids are tucked in bed at night. Others have tasks that must be done during the day, while the kids are awake, active and often hungry for not only food, but also attention. Now is the time to start planning ahead, so the summer will be a breeze for the whole family.

High School students can earn College credit

More High Schools have programs set up now for students to earn College credit. These are known as Dual Enrollment programs. The students get a head start on College, and usually save money on tuition too. They also get a better idea of the workload involved in taking college classes. Most students need to meet a minimum grade point average and take Community College entrance exams. If your kids are in High School now, check with the school counselor for more information.

Beware of Work at Home Scams

With the recent economy problems, there has been a major increase in work-at-home scams. Complaints have increased 275. Think twice before you consider any work-at-home program, especially if they make it sound so easy. If they promise that you will get rich quick, run the opposite direction. Call the Better Business Bureau or your state Attorney General, and check on all work-at-home programs.
